TSN is reporting former Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett will be named the next coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Coyotes have said they will make a major announcement regarding the structure of their hockey operations department at 6 p.m. ET. The press conference can be seen live on NHL.com and the NHL Network.
Wayne Gretzky, who had coached the Coyotes for the previous four seasons, resigned Thursday.
Tippett coached the Stars for the last six seasons, leading the club to five playoff appearances, two division titles and the 2008 Western Conference Finals. His teams averaged 47 wins in each of his first five seasons, and went over 100 points three times.
Last season, though, the team had to deal with struggles by goalie Marty Turco, controversy surrounding Sean Avery, and major injuries to key players like team captain Brenden Morrow, defenseman Sergei Zubov and center Brad Richards. The Stars finished 12th in the Western Conference, and Tippett was fired June 10, not long after Joe Nieuwendyk was hired as GM.
